  12. Binary posts do not belong in unmoderated discussion groups.

  14. I run a program that searchs for, and issues advisory cancels for,
  15. large binaries in the akr, biz, comp, misc, news, rec, and sci
  16. hierachies.
  17.  
  18. I have issued 3 cancels for large binary files (average size 221,337
  19. characters - total size 664,011 characters) posted to 2 different
  20. unmoderated discussion groups in the comp and news hierarchies as
  21. follows:
  22.    2 comp.dcom.modems
  23.    1 news.newusers.questions
  24.  
  25. This pointer is being posted to each affected group listed above.

  27. If you want to see exactly which file was deleted from a particular
  28. group, or the criteria that I used to select it, read the full report
  29. in news.admin.net-abuse.announce.  Look for AR159 as in the
  30. subject of this pointer.  The full report can also be found in
  31. alt.nocem.misc and alt.retromod.

  33. There has been a long-standing consensus among news administrators that
  34. binaries belong in binaries newsgroups, and not elsewhere.  There also
  35. seems to be a consensus supporting the cancellation of large binaries in
  36. discussion groups as long as appropriate protocols are followed.

  38. In my opinion, the best way to distribute binary files is via ftp or
  39. the web.  With the ready availablity of ftpmail servers, even uucp
  40. sites can retrieve binaries from ftp sites.
  41.  
  42. However, if you really must post a binary to Usenet, please post it to
  43. an appropriate binaries newsgroup such as alt.binaries.misc.  Then, if
  44. you like, post something in the appropriate discussion group telling
  45. people where to find the binary in the binaries group (a pointer to
  46. the binary).  This will permit news administrators and users to decide
  47. for themselves whether to receive the binary files.
